In May 2008, herder families in three Eastern aimags (Khenti, Sukhbaatar, Dornod) suffered
a significant loss oflife,property and livestock when a strong wind,sand and snow storm
whipped through the region destroying everything in its deadly path. 52 people lost their
more than 5,000 herder families lost all or most of lives and their livestock.
In the year 2000, Khan Bank pioneered herder loans in response to the dzud that impacted
thousands of herder families across Mongolia. Over the past 8 years,
Khan Bank has disbursed MNT 508.1 billion through 421,900 herder loans.
