Tsegmed’s extensive composition takes its theme from both the historical and art historical sources of Mongolia. The picture depicts a migration scene of an ancient ruler, when his huge palace-ger is pulled by a dozen bulls. An extensive scene is rendered as if seen from above managing, therefore, to capture what appear to be several events at one time. Tsegmed borrows the style of prehistoric rock imagery for his painting, where the hunting and warfare all find a place in the depiction. This painting is flat in overall quality with a number of images and motifs directly taken from prehistoric rock art. These are, for instance, the four warriors in the left upper corner, two of whom are depicted upside-down. These are also the numerous sign marks which fill in the
plain background. |
